Are you frustrated that your posts don’t seem to get any reach and that no matter what you do you can’t seem to grow your followers on Instagram?
Fret not, my friend, you’re not alone.
Originally posts on Instagram where shown chronologically. Meaning that if you posted something, it would show up in all your followers feed right at that moment.
Ooh, how times have changed…
Today Instagram uses an algorithm that defines what is shown to its users first. For example, posts from friends and family are shown first, because the algorithm wants to help connect people with their friends and family. So those posts are prioritized. I find it super annoying that I get to see the same posts on Instagram and Facebook now all the time, but that’s how it is.
Complaining doesn’t get you anywhere though, and fortunately there are still a few things you can do to get more followers on Instagram in 2018!
5 Tips to Grow Your Instagram Followers in 2018
#1 Be proactive and find your tribe
The best way to grow your following is to go out there and find them. So get active. Start following people. Start becoming a member of the community and find people that are interested in similar things you are offering, that have similar values.
For example, on Instagram you can search for relevant hashtags like #yogainlondon when you’re a yoga teacher in London and then check out the accounts of yoga teachers using these hashtags that have similar values as you. Next check out their followers – because if they like what the other yoga teacher you just checked out is posting, they might be interested in your content as well. And then follow them and engage with them.
This is important: Only following other yoga teachers is not going to help you grow your business, you need to find your potential students and customers.
#2 Quality is more important than quantity
I actually love this. Before the algorithm changed, it used to be the more you post, the more people will see your posts. This is not true anymore. Don’t get hang up on having to post every single day or even more often. If you have nothing exciting to share, it’s better not to post. And let’s face it, who has the time to produce high-quality and engaging content every single day if you don’t have a social media manager?
#3 Be of service and give value
Social Media allows you to connect with your students and fellow yoga teachers and build a deeper connection. So use it to build online friendships. Share your expertise and your passion with your community. Building that bond is what may convert your followers into a customer later on because they now know, like, and trust you.
#4 Focus on your community, not on numbers
Big follower number without engagement are not real. The wrong followers who are not really interested in you or your services are not real. That‘s not going to help your business. Connecting with people, engaging with them, building a community, that‘s real.
Use Instagram as a way to build community, rather than a way to get people to pay you.
#5 Find ways to engage with your audience that bring you joy + results
This can be writing long descriptions that you post with each image on Instagram or elaborate Instagram Stories. If you don’t like what you’re creating and sharing, you won’t be able to keep it up. Most important is that you feel comfortable and only work on the things that bring you joy and actual results for your business.
